Saturday, May 18, 12:30-3:30 pm - Voice of Roma Herdeljezi Balkan Romani Music Festival

 with Džambo Aguševi Orchestra

Admission: Free!

Location: Yerba Buena Gardens, 760 Howard Street, San Francisco

Making its San Francisco debut, Aguševi’s eight-piece orchestra has earned respect around the world with innovative arrangements designed to make dancing irresistible. The festival includes a Romani dance workshop led by Šani Rifati. He also leads a panel discussion on Romani music and culture with fellow Voice of Roma leader Carol Silverman.  Sponsored by Voice of Roma.  (There is another event in the evening with dance workshop and music by the same orchestra at Star Line Social Club in Oakland. Thursday, May 23, 7:30-10:30 pm - Bulgarian Dance Workshop with Yuliyan Yordanov

Location: St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church, 18870 Allendale Avenue, Saratoga

Bulgarian ethnic dance is centuries-old tradition that still brings people of all ages together for moments of unity and spontaneous joy. Irregular rhythms, upbeat enthralling music on traditional Balkan instruments, and gorgeous costumes… Yuliyan Yordanov has been living in the San Jose area for the past few years, and has decided to return to Bulgaria. This may be our last chance for a while to learn Bulgarian dances from him.  Much more information at the link below!

Saturday, May 25, 8 am-9 pm - 2nd Annual Northern California Dance Symposium

Admission: $15-$50 — $50 covers all four workshops, breakfast and lunch for ages 13 and up; the evening BBQ and dance is an additional $25, ($15 for children under 12). Tickets can be ordered online before May 25, according to the website.

Location: Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont

May 31-June 2 -- Statewide Folk Dance Festival 2019  “Ethnic Treasures of Folk Dance!”

Admission:  It’s a bargain! Festival package includes all workshops (with five guest teachers) and all dance parties for $130.  Discount for students and for pre-registering (by April 15 or May 20). Events are also priced individually.  Online registration is available until 11 pm May 30.

Admission: $12, students are half-price and children are free – but no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Location: Bethany Lutheran Church, 1095 Cloud Avenue, Menlo Park

French dance fun for all ages! Gary Breitbard and Jena Rauti will help teach and lead French dances to the live music of Fête Musette. We will take you to Alsace, Brittany, Gascony, Provence, and the Massif Central in a period where the waltz, mazurka, polka, scottish, bourree, and rondeau ruled. Join us for an evening of called dances for all ages – no experience required!  Tips for the band, and snack and beverage contributions are always appreciated.

Cost: $485-$950 for adults, reduced fee for children.  (3-day to 1 week packages available)

Location: Mendocino Woodlands Camp, Mendocino, CA

July 21-28 and July 28-August 4 - Stockton Folk Dance Camp

Cost: $550/week per person plus meals, lodging, and optional items

Location:  The University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA

Learn and celebrate folk dances from around the world!

This year’s teachers are Joe Kaloyanides Graziosi (Greek Dances), Gigi Jensen (Argentine Couple Dances), Gergana Panova (Bulgarian Dances), Tony Parkes (American Square Dances and Contras), Richard Schmidt (Polish Dances), Rebecca Tsai (Chinese Dances), Maurits van Geel (International Dances), Tineke van Geel (Armenian Dances).  The band will be Miamon Miller and Free Range Organic.

August 18-24 and August 25-31 - Mainewoods Dance Camp

Cost: varies from $515 to $810 per week; scholarships are available; discounted rates for children

Location: Camp Indian Acres in Fryeburg, Maine

The Mainewoods Dance Camp Mission statement just about sums it up:

“It is the mission of Mainewoods Dance Camp to preserve and promote International Folk Dancing along with the rich customs and traditions of various countries from around the world. To that end we provide our campers with ethnic exposure to dance, food, song, music, costumes, shared traditions and more. We welcome dancers at all levels of experience, young and old, to join our summer dance community in a natural country setting, for a unique, warm and enriching experience.”

For two weeks this summer, Zellerbach Hall will become a beacon for the beauty and power of our diversity.  Performances July 6 & 7 and July 13 & 14 by the finest world dance and music artists in the Bay Area. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, May 21, online or by phone.
