Friday, April 26 through Sunday, May 5, 2019 - Bay Area Dance Week!

Bay Area Dance Week is a 10-day celebration of dance featuring hundreds of FREE classes, performances, open rehearsals, lecture demonstrations, and the wildly popular Kick-Off* event (*One Dance, details and sign up will be available at the link below.  Location and date/time: Yerba Buena Gardens, SF, on Friday, April 26 at noon.  Link to 2018 One Dance video:

Sunday, April 28, 12:30-5:30 pm - 2019 Blossom Festival

Admission: FREE!

Wellness Center, 3rd floor, Studio 301, City College of San Francisco, 50 Phelan Ave, San Francisco

Folk dance party, short dance workshops, and dance performance by guest company.  Children and beginners encouraged to attend!  Hosted by Jeanne-Marie Hughes, CCSF Folk Dancers, and SF Bay Area Folk Dance Organizations.


Friday, May 3, 7:30-10 pm - Balkan Dance Party with Zabava!

Admission: $12

Bethany Lutheran Church, 1095 Cloud Ave., Menlo Park

Live Balkan music and dancing from the middle of the dance floor! Snacks and drinks are welcome, plus tips for the band.  Sponsored by Stanford Folk Dancers.


Wednesday, May 8, 7:45-10 pm - Ocho de Mayo Party

Admission: $9

Holbrook Palmer Park, Carriage House, 150 Watkins Avenue, Atherton

Join Suzanne Rocca-Butler and the Carriage House Folk Dancers for an Ocho de Mayo (May 8th) Party. Snacks or beverages to share are also appreciated if you are able to bring them.

Admission: $15

Strawberry Recreation Center, 118 E. Strawberry Drive, Mill Valley

Live music…spacious sprung dance floor…music from Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Armenia, Turkey, and Balkan Roma (Gypsy)…bring snacks to share if possible….

Saturday, May 11, 5:30-11:30 pm - Café Shalom Founder Celebration

Admission: $10

St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 1399 43rd Ave, at Judah St., San Francisco

Potluck dinner and dance party to celebrate the 90th birthday of Cafè Shalom founder Ruth Browns Gundelfinger, and the group’s 50th year. This will be a chance to honor Ruth’s passion for Israeli dance and the joy she has brought to her teaching as well as to celebrate the Café Shalom community she envisioned 50 years ago. For the potluck:  Dessert will be provided, so please bring other food to share for dinner along with serving utensils (no pork, shellfish or alcohol please).

Admission: $10

Admission: $5 member, $7 non-members

Live Oak Park Community Center, 1301 Shattuck Avenue (at Berryman), Berkeley

Dances will be at all levels.  Guaranteed to be a fun evening!  Please bring snacks to share if you are able.  Sponsored by Berkeley Folk Dancers Intermediate Class.

Friday, May 18, 7-11 pm - Da! Mozhem and the Nema Problema Chorale Party

Admission: $13

May 31-June 2 -- Statewide Folk-Dance Festival 2019  “Ethnic Treasures of Folk Dance!”

Admission:  It’s a bargain! Festival package includes all workshops (with five guest teachers) and all dance parties for $130.  Discount for students and for pre-registering (by April 15 or May 20). Events are also priced individually.

[Note from your Events editor: I was able to go to a Statewide Festival three years ago when I was a new member of Berkeley Folk Dancers, and it was a wonderful experience!  I highly recommend it!!]


Friday, June 7, 7:30-10 pm – French Dancing

Admission: $12, students are half-price and children are free – but no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Bethany Lutheran Church, 1095 Cloud Avenue, Menlo Park

French dance fun for all ages! Gary Breitbard and Jena Rauti will help teach and lead French dances to the live music of Fête Musette. We will take you to Alsace, Brittany, Gascony, Provence, and the Massif Central in a period where the waltz, mazurka, polka, Scottish, bourree, and rondeau ruled. Join us for an evening of called dances for all ages – no experience required!  Tips for the band, and snack and beverage contributions are always appreciated.


Saturday, June 15, 7:30-10:30 pm - Palomanians Ice Cream Social

Admission: $10

St. Bede’s Church Hall, 2650 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park

A tradition for decades, the Palomanians will provide all the ingredients for an Ice Cream Social and Dance Party! Nothing to bring besides your dance shoes. There's no teaching so the party begins at 7:30pm.

Cost: $8

June 15-22 – Israeli, Balkan, Scottish and Polynesian Music and Dance Workshops at Mendocino Folklore Camp

Cost: $485-$950 for adults, reduced fee for children.  (3-day to 1-week packages available)

Location: Mendocino Woodlands Camp, Mendocino, CA

A broad array of instrumental, vocal, ensemble, and dance classes at all levels are offered across five daily 75-minute class slots.  Online registration and much more information at the link below.

Note: A few partial-tuition-waiver work exchanges may be available for full-week participants. The deadline to apply for this is May 1st. 


July 21-28 and July 28-August 4 - StocktonFolk Dance Camp

Cost: $550/week per person plus meals, lodging, and optional items

Location:  The University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA

Learn and celebrate folk dances from around the world!

This year’s teachers are Joe Kaloyanides Graziosi (Greek Dances), Gigi Jensen (Argentine Couple Dances), Gergana Panova (Bulgarian Dances), Tony Parkes (American Square Dances and Contras), Richard Schmidt (Polish Dances), Rebecca Tsai (Chinese Dances), Maurits van Geel (International Dances), Tineke van Geel (Armenian Dances).  The band will be Miamon Miller and Free Range Organic.

Scholarship application deadline: April 30

August 18-24 and August 25-31 - Mainewoods Dance Camp

Cost: varies from $515 to $810 per week; scholarships are available; discounted rates for children

Location: Camp Indian Acres in Fryeburg, Maine

The Mainewoods Dance Camp Mission statement just about sums it up:

“It is the mission of Mainewoods Dance Camp to preserve and promote International Folk Dancing along with the rich customs and traditions of various countries from around the world. To that end we provide our campers with ethnic exposure to dance, food, song, music, costumes, shared traditions and more. We welcome dancers at all levels of experience, young and old, to join our summer dance community in a natural country setting, for a unique, warm and enriching experience.”
