Theme: “Dancing on the Orient Express”

The Orient Express was a luxury train running from Paris to Istanbul over several routes. Its glory days were from 1883 to the start of World War 2. These routes passed through 12 countries and we do dances from all of them. This was a very First Class train. The passengers included nobility, the very famous,  and the just plain very rich. Which passenger will you be? Nobility? Movie star? Opera diva? Mysterious widow travelling with her late husbands’ ashes? Charming card shark? Jewel thief? Belgian detective with remarkable moustache? (Think “Murder on the Orient Express.”) So bring your dancing shoes and climb aboard!

In its glory days, the various routes followed by the Orient Express included the following 14 countries:

    1.      France

    2.      Germany

    3.      Austria

    4.      Hungary

    5.      Romania

    6.      Bulgaria

    7.      Switzerland

    8.      Italy

    9.      Slovenia

    10.  Croatia

    11.  Serbia

    12.  Macedonia

    13.  Greece

    14.  Turkey

    • Monte Toyon

Berkeley Folk Dancers will be dancing for the 37th year at Monte Toyon. If you have never come, join us and see for yourself why the tradition has lasted so long.  This year we are fortunate to have Bruce Herbold teaching Scottish dance with his wife, Patti Cobb, providing us with live music for the lessons.  Bruce has been teaching Scottish dance since 1983 with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.   His classes are always great fun.

The Camp is in a lovely, relaxing redwood grove near Santa Cruz. The dance hall has a beautiful wooden floor with a grand stone fireplace. Class is from 9am to noon on Saturday and Sunday with an optional class at 1pm on Saturday. Saturday afternoon can be spent walking the beaches, hiking through the redwoods, visiting the nearby towns, or the monarch butterflies at the state park (or napping!). Meals are prepared by the friendly kitchen staff, and we have an all-request dance party Friday and Saturday evenings. The accommodations in Cary Lodge, a two-story building with a lounge where we will have the happy hour before dinner, consists of 4-person dorm rooms with bunk beds. We try to have no more than 3 people in a room. Come to dance, eat, drink, sing, and visit with old friends and make new ones!

Space is limited to 50 attendees, and room assignments are made in the order that deposits are received. The rate for the entire weekend has gone up slightly - $245. Without the Friday dinner, the rate is $230. Please complete and return the paper registration form (available here), or complete and submit the online registration form, by December 1, 2018.

If you register online you can pay either by check or by credit card. You won't need to pay the full amount right away; instead you can pay a $50 deposit to hold your place.  To do this click the "Sign Up" button and choose the "Deposit Only" option. After submitting the registration form you can wait until Jan 1 to pay the full amount. When you are ready to pay the full amount come back to this sign up page but choose  the "Pay Balance" option. (You might get a message saying you are already registered but just click the "new registration" button to complete paying your balance).  You can pay the full amount now by clicking "Sign Up" and choosing  the "Pay Full Amount" option.

You can register and pay for additional people by clicking the "Add Guest" button at the bottom of the main registration form page.

Your position in the queue for room preference will be determined by the date we receive payment of either the deposit or the full amount.

But remember the registration form is due by Dec 1 and final payment is due January 1, 2019. On January 2, non-members may register. The last day for refund of deposits is January 5th and the last day for refund of 50% of full payment is Thursday, January 17th.
