    From Big Wayne Phillips

thanksgiving is coming on 22 nov.   we're not gonna dance ☹ that day, so come tuesday 20 nov, instead ! . . .

-------- remember, too, the videos of dances we're gonna do, will give you a leg up (pun ) on 'em when you get here . . .

ps:   some important FD etiquette just below .

    ++++++++

we, the thursday class, still need somebody who'd like to send a little e-note (like this one ) to our fellow thursday dancers, so easy and fun !  you'll learn about other dance sites in the bay area, you'll learn who are the movers and shoulder-shakers in BFD, and who you can go to for help !  you'll be able to post recipes or histories of the dances we do .   you won't have to do it like i do it - and i'll help you get started (actually there are already a few people who have expressed hope that you'll replace me .  i know they'd be willing to help, too ! )   contact me at:  BigWayne19@Comcast.NET . . .

    ++++++++++
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
     xxxxxxxxxxxxx

a little etiquette goes a long way:

-------- in line and circle dances, avoid wrestling, give your right hand palm up ! (left hand down, duh ... ) . . .

    learning a new dance ?   get next to a good dancer . . .

join lines at the END, and join sets at the bottom - away from the music .

------- be thoughtful about any rings you wear .

    use sense when using scents

always wear your name tag.   i'm embarrassed when i don't remember your name and even more when you don't remember mine ☹, so i ALWAYS wear my name tag - with big enough letters that others can actually read my name . . .

--------- always say hello to dancers whose names you don't recognize ('cuz they're wearing a name tag ) - it might be the guy who's considering joining BFD !

you don't have to know every dance perfectly to always be welcome - but if you don't know a dance, step behind the line .

    Hello dancers,

This Friday's our latest Fun Night, Cross Dress Waltz Party, at Live Oak, from 7:30-10:30.  It's a modest $5, and we'd sure appreciate any snacks you could bring!  As to costume, get creative -- wear something you've never worn before!  Take a fling with a frock!  Wear a beard or just get weird!

Next week is Thanksgiving, which means the Intermediate class won't be dancing that Thursday.  However, there's no need to let all those extra calories go unchallenged:  the Intermediates are invited to join the Beginner class on November 20.  The first half of the class will be Beginner teaches, followed by the Intermediate teaches.  Marija's off at Revels rehearsals, so Marian and I will be doing the whole thing.

    +++++++++

Save the date!  BFD's biggest production of the year, in confederation with the Federation, is the Festival Of The Oaks.  This year it will be Sunday, February 10.  Attached as both a PDF and a Word Doc is the flyer for the event -- print it off, pass it around!  The details are at the bottom of this email as well.

Exercise That Helps Mental Health Most !

Certain fitness routines do more to help avoid depression, stress or other emotional problems, new research finds, but
team sports like DANCING were shown to have the biggest positive impact on mental health.

    By
    Sumathi Reddy
    Aug. 20, 2018 11:07 a.m. ET

We assume exercise improves our mental health. But what kind of exercise works best?

Researchers looking at the link between physical activity and mental health found that team sports fared best, followed by cycling, on the road or a stationary bike.

The study, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry this month, is among the first of its kind, and the largest, analyzing the effect of different types of exercise.

It found that physical activity, performed in groups, provided greater benefits than solo running or walking.

People who played group sports, like dancing, reported 22.3% fewer poor mental-health days than those who didn’t exercise. Runners fared 19% better, while those who did only household chores were 11.8% better.

The researchers also found that those who exercise between 30 and 60 minutes had the best mental health, with 45 minutes the optimal duration.

    AN ACTIVE DIFFERENCE

Research found better reports of mental health from those who participated in various physical activities. Below, a look at how people reported feeling after a month of different activities, compared with those who were not physically active.
    •       Group activities: 22.3%
    •       Cycling: 21.6%
    •       Aerobic or gym exercise*: 20.1%
    •       Running or jogging: 19%
    •       Recreational sports: 18.9%
    •       Winter or water sports: 18%
    •       Walking: 17.7%
    •       Household chores: 11.8%

    *—not including cycling or running

Overall, people who exercised reported having two poor mental-health days in the previous month, compared with 3.4 days for those who didn’t exercise. That translates into a 43% improvement in mental health for those who exercised, Dr. Chekroud says.

“This is very strong evidence that there is a relationship between exercise and mental health,” Dr. Chekroud says. “It seems like there are some sweet spots, and the relationship is probably complex. But even things like walking or household chores seem to have benefits.”

His research team grouped 75 different types of exercise into eight categories. They controlled for factors like age, race and body-mass index.

Madhukar H. Trivedi, founding director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says a robust body of evidence shows exercise improves depression. He has done many studies examining this question.

    From David Hillis

    Hello dancers,

No doubt you've heard whispered tales of Judy the Merciless, who would sweep through the Live Oak closet, removing and recycling everything that wasn't nailed down.  Parents would use the image to strike fear into the hearts of their children: "If you don't clean up your room, Judy the Merciless will take your things!"  Civilizations trembled.

But for years now, it's been eerily quiet -- no Judy in sight.  But now, just when you thought your nightmares were over, a new scourge has appeared, Lynne the Liquidator!  She has declared war on the Lost and Found bin.  In a rare showing of compassion, she is allowing all her subjects a brief period to go through the bin and retrieve what was once theirs, or lose it forever.  So study this picture;  go through bin;  this is your one and only chance!

VOICES OF MUSIC PRESENTS OUR 2018-2019 CONCERTS
Join us for our Twelfth Season!

Our 2018-2019 season opens with Early Beethoven Sonatas

Please join us on November 15, 17 and 18 for an exciting early Beethoven recital featuring Cynthia Freivogel, violin; Tanya Tomkins, cello and Eric Zivian, fortepiano. The music in this program was dedicated to Count Lichnowsky and Rodolphe Kreutzer. This concert is acollaboration with the Valley of the Moon Music Festival.

Piano Trio Op. 1, No.1 – the first of Beethoven’s piano trios to be published and performed – was dedicated to one of his most supportive patrons, Prince Lichnowsky, effectively launching
    Beethoven’scareer as a composer in 1795.

Beethoven relied on a subscription model for this work in which subscribers would receive advance copies of the scores for a higher price, and this proved to be a success both artistically as well as financially.

The ninth of Beethoven’s ten sonatas for violin and piano, theKreutzer, is the grandest and most impressive of them all. It is by far the most difficult and puts both musicians on an equal footing throughout. It originally written for George Polgreen Bridgetower in 1803, and the performance was well received. Later Beethoven and Bridgetower quarreled, and so when the sonata was published, Beethoven changed the dedication to the violinist and composer Rodolphe Kreutzer.

We all know BFD is the best dance class deal around, but the best performance deal is the Ethnic Dance Festival Auditions.  For just $10 a day (kids 12 and under are free), you can watch dozens of Bay Area performance troupes making their best effort to get into next year's Festival.  There's a new group dancing every 15 minutes, and you can spend a few hours there, or all day!

The dates are November 3, 4 and 10 and the location is the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.  Get all the lowdown atwww.sfethnicdancefestival.org

     From David Hillis

    Hello dancers,

Now, it wasn't a flock of flamingos on the Serengeti you saw at Live Oak last night!  It was the proudly pink dancers of BFD, standing on two legs at the annual I-Ball.  More details and more pictures in a couple days in the Bulletin . . .

Afternoon alert for next week:  Due to some long-planned programs, Northbrae church will not be available for our Tuesday and Thursday afternoon classes next week, September 25 and 27.

Please join us Saturday, Sept 22, 2:00 p.m. to discuss next year's dance camp at Monte Toyon.  Help us decide what type of dance we want taught and who we want to teach it.  We are also interested in any ideas to improve the weekend.  We are meeting at Judy Stonefield's, 6292 Colby St, Oakland.

Judy and I will be providing treats to keep everyone's energy up.  Call me if you have any questions.

Folk Dance Federation Vice President Marian Snyder, Publicity Chair Marija Hillis, and Parliamentarian Bill Lidicker would like to invite you to the Federation's Octoberfest Officers Ball in Pleasanton on Saturday, October 20.  Marija will be one of the teachers. Marian and Marija will be in charge of the dinner.  This is always a fun event and a chance to learn new dances and have a dance party with folk dancers from all over the Bay Area.

    You'll find attached as a PDF a flyer/registration form.
